The Thief and His Mother

A school boy stole a book from one of his schoolfellows and brought it home to his mother. She did not chastise him. Grown into a man, he began to steal bigger things till being caught, he was led to prison.

Seeing his mother wailing and beating her breast, he begged to be allowed to speak in her ear. When she drew near he applied his teeth and bit off the lobe. When upbraided by the people he replied: "It is she who is to blame for my wrong, for when I stole my schoolfellow's book had she given me a flogging I should never have come to this end."
