The Miser

Translation:

A miser sold all that he had and turned it into a great lump of gold which he hid in a hole in the ground and went many times to visit. This aroused the notice of one of his workmen who allowing there might be gold hidden in the place stole away one evening to try and find it.

When the miser returned and found the hole empty he wept and tore his hair in great grief. A neighbor who saw him weeping and learned the cause of it said: "Fret not but take a stone and put it in the same place and think that it's a lump of gold; for as you never meant to use it, the one will do as much good as the other."
